Professor Watermelon Teaches Us a Story Map

In addition to the assembly, each grade level was honored to have a writing workshop with Professor Watermelon.
We learned that at the beginning of the story we should be introduced to the protagonist. What is a protagonist?
Who is the antagonist in your story?
 Did you add a conflict?
 Did you add any complications?
I just know you remembered to add a climax and resolutions to your story.

If you forget, Mr. Johnson created this story map for you, that replicated Professor Watermelon's Anchor Chart he created before your very eyes.

December Homework Award Goes to...

The crowd goes wild!
I am extra proud of these students because December is a month with a lot of distractions, yet they stayed committed to their goal! I hope they got something they wanted from the Prize Box, but I DO know this... they are smarter for having done their homework.

MLK, Jr Storm!

Holy snowballs! Snow, ice, rain and wind? How are you all doing? That MLK, Jr Storm of 2012 sure did hit us hard here in Kent. Did you know that Governor Gregoire (she is in charge of Washington State) has declared Washington State in A State of Emergency? That means we need help from the nation recovering - help with money and man power to get us back up and running.

I am hoping your are warm and safe. I have been without power since Wednesday, Jan 18. We just got our power restored a few hours ago. Please listen carefully to the news tomorrow morning as to whether or not we have school at Emerald Park. The Kent School District will be open for business, and the teachers and staff have to report back to school tomorrow, but you may not. We are one of three schools that do not have adequate power restored, so you may not be coming to school on Tuesday, Jan 24. There will be posted information on the Kent School District web site by 5 AM, so look for information there.
We will have a lot to write about when we get back together. There must be at least 100 stories we could tell. What an adventure we've had. I hope you have taken time to read and practice your multiplication facts. See you all soon. I miss you all.

Holiday Houses

Ohh the fun we had making Holiday Houses! Are you hands still sticky?

Even our parents go into the act. Here's Luis' mom.

Natalie's mom looks sticky, too.

Emily's dad had some great ideas!

Agnessa was using her super powers to break that licorice.

Professor Watermelon's Writing Assembly

Although you might think it is hard to take a writer named Professor Watermelon seriously ...
especially, one who looks like this...
 and acts like this...
 and sings like this...

 and plays with frogs...
  You'd be wrong
.
Professor Watermelon taught us information about the life of writers and where they get their ideas.
 Can you say...
A big thanks to sixth grade teacher, Mr. Johnson, for introducing our school community to Professor Riddle.
